Nearly half of everyone who went through the system, came out the other side, and thought: I picked wrong.

Now zoom out from majors to careers.

Two-thirds of workers report career regrets. Among millennials, that number hits 70%.

The single most common regret? Not pursuing a passion.

This is a systemic failure rate that would shut down any other industry.

If 44% of surgeries went wrong, we'd close the hospital. If 70% of bridges showed structural failure at midlife, we'd fire every engineer in the country.

But when it comes to the single most consequential decision a young person makes we just shrug and call it "figuring it out."

Nobody in that room lacked information. They had course catalogs, career fairs, aptitude tests, and a $200/hr SAT tutor.

What they lacked was someone whose job it was to help them understand themselves.

## Optimized for Admission, Not for Life

Think about what "guidance" looks like inside the system. A school counselor with 400 students on their caseload. A 20-minute meeting junior year where you pick five colleges based on your GPA band. Maybe a personality quiz that tells you you're an ENFJ, which is approximately as useful as a horoscope.

The entire apparatus is oriented around a single question: what will get you in? Not “what are you drawn to?” Not “what problems make you lose track of time?” Not “where do your strange, specific interests intersect with something the world actually needs?” Just “what's your score, and what university tier does that unlock?”

The SAT tutor is the perfect symbol of the problem. Parents will spend $10,000 to raise a test score by 50 points without blinking. That investment has a clear, measurable return: a better college, a better resume line, a slightly wider on-ramp to the same conveyor belt.

But investing in helping a kid figure out what kind of life would actually fulfill them? There's no line item for that. No ROI spreadsheet. No clear metric. So it doesn't happen.

And then we act surprised when those kids wake up at 30 making $150k only to feel hollow inside.

The "what do you want to be when you grow up?" question is the original sin here. It asks a child to pick a role from a menu before they've even begun to understand their own appetites. It's like asking someone to order dinner when they've never tasted food.

The honest answer for most 17-year-olds is "I have no idea," but the system can't process that input. It needs a declared major by sophomore year. It needs a track. It needs you slotted.

So kids do what smart kids do: they optimize for the system. They pick the major that sounds prestigious, or that their parents approve of, or that the career data says pays well. They perform brilliantly at every gate (grades, internships, first job) and then quietly wonder, years later, why none of it feels like it's truly theirs.

## Aristotle Already Solved This

The education we actually need was described in detail about 2,400 years ago. We just stopped listening.

Aristotle argued that education has one purpose: to help people flourish. Not to help them function. Not to help them earn. To help them flourish—to pursue what he called eudaimonia, a word we clumsily translate as "happiness" but that really means something closer to "living well and doing well" simultaneously.

A life of purpose, competence, and virtue, all working together.

His framework was built on a few common-sense ideas that sound radical against the backdrop of modern education:

First: people have a telos, an inherent nature and purpose. Education's job is to help you discover yours, not to assign one to you.

Second: that discovery is individualized. Aristotle recognized that people have different strengths, different aptitudes, different constitutions. A teacher who treats every student identically has failed before they've started.

Third: education is holistic. Body, character and intellect. Not just intellect. And certainly not just test performance.

Socrates had a word for what a great teacher does: maieutics. Literally, "midwifery."

The idea is that knowledge and self-understanding are already within the student. The teacher's job is to draw them out through questioning, not to pour information in from the outside. The Socratic method isn't a debate technique. It's a philosophy of education built on the premise that the most important things a person needs to know are already latent within them, waiting for the right questions to bring them to the surface.

We didn't lose this wisdom because it was wrong. We lost it because it couldn't be standardized.

You can't scale Socratic midwifery to a classroom of 35. You can't measure eudaimonia on a scantron. You can't build an admissions process around the question "is this student discovering their nature?" So we replaced all of it with something that could be measured, scaled, and administered: content delivery and assessment. Inputs and outputs. Scores.

The ancient world understood something we've forgotten: the most important education isn't learning what to think or even how to think. It's learning who you are. Everything else follows from that.

## Discovery, Intersection, Wonder

So what would it look like if we actually took this seriously?

Imagine a tutor whose job is not to help your child ace a test but to help them uncover a life. Someone who sits with a 14-year-old and instead of asking "have you thought about what you want to major in?" asks: What do you find yourself doing when nobody's making you do anything? What problems bother you enough that you'd work on them for free? What are you good at that you don't even realize is unusual?

This tutor's work would move through three phases.

The first is discovery. Not "career discovery" in the way guidance counselors mean it (here's a list of jobs, pick one). Real discovery: helping a young person identify their intrinsic interests and natural aptitudes. Not what they're "good at" in school (which is often just what they've been rewarded for) but what they're drawn to when nobody's watching, grading, or incentivizing. The kid who spends hours taking apart electronics isn't just "fidgety." The kid who reads about ancient civilizations for fun isn't just "bookish." Those instincts are data.

The second is intersection. Most interesting lives aren't built on a single skill or interest; they're built at the collision point between two or three. The kid who loves biology and storytelling might become a science writer, or a documentary filmmaker, or a public health communicator. The kid who's obsessed with both music and mathematics might find their way into acoustic engineering, or algorithmic composition, or instrument design. A great tutor helps a young person see these intersections before the system forces them into a single lane.

The third is wonder. This might be the most important, and it's the one most completely absent from modern education. Expose kids to the long arc of human thought. Show them that the questions they're wrestling with (What makes a good life? What do I owe other people? How should I spend my limited time?) have been asked by brilliant minds for millennia. Let them encounter Aristotle, the Stoics, the Bhagavad Gita, Montaigne, the Daoist tradition. Not as a humanities requirement to be endured, but as a living conversation they're being invited into. Give them the sense that the world is deep; that beneath the surface of daily life there are layers of meaning, beauty, and inquiry that will never be exhausted.

In a world where AI can perform most cognitive tasks, where technical skills have a half-life measured in months, where entire industries appear and disappear within a decade, the question "what should I study?" is becoming almost meaningless.

But the question "what kind of person should I become?" has never been more urgent. Self-knowledge doesn't depreciate. A sense of purpose doesn't get automated away. The ability to find meaning in your work, to connect what you do with who you are... that is the most durable skill there is.

## What I Want for My Kids

My wife and I are planning to start a family. And when I think about what I want for our kids, it's not "get into a good college." It's not "land a high-paying job." I've done both of those things, and I can tell you firsthand that neither one, on its own, produces the kind of life you're actually proud of.

What I want is for our kids to know themselves. To have had someone in their corner early enough who asked the right questions, helped them see their own strange constellation of interests and abilities and introduced them to the ancient wisdom that makes a life feel coherent rather than accidental.

Thirty-six percent of college graduates regret their major. God knows the number who regret their careers. That's not a failure of information. It's a failure of self-knowledge. And the fix isn't more data, more career fairs, or more optimization.

It's the oldest idea in education, finally taken seriously: know thyself. And someone willing to help you get there.



Why the most important part of education has nothing to do with school and everything to do with self-discovery.

Know Thyself


My wife and I both went through traditional schools. Good ones, by most measures. We came out literate, credentialed, and employable. By any metric the system worked.

So why does the idea of sending our own kids through the same thing make us so uncomfortable?

We want to start a family soon, and the closer that gets, the harder it becomes to ignore a question most parents either agonize over or sleepwalk through: where do you send your kids to school? Not which school… What kind of school.

Last week I published an essay called 16,000 Hours about the structural problems with American education. My main argument was that a child spends roughly 16,000 hours in compulsory schooling but the core material requires only a fraction of that time. The rest is crowd management dressed up as learning. Thirty minutes of instruction stretched to fill an hour. Review sessions for kids who didn't get it, while the kids who did sit idle. Worksheets designed to keep forty kids quiet, not to teach them anything.

The system was built during the Industrial Revolution to produce literate factory workers and assimilate immigrants. It has barely changed since.

That essay explored the problem. This one is about what's actually available if you decide the default isn't good enough. I've spent the last several months reading the research, comparing models, and trying to understand what works, what doesn't, and what the tradeoffs are.

A caveat before we start: every alternative model carries a selection bias. Families who actively choose something different are often more engaged than families who accept the default. That engagement probably matters more than any curriculum. Keep that in mind as you read the data. It doesn't invalidate the results, but it should make you appropriately skeptical of any single model claiming to be a silver bullet.

## Established Alternatives

### Montessori

Montessori is the most established alternative with the deepest body of research behind it. The model was developed by Maria Montessori over a century ago and is built around self-directed learning. Students choose their own activities from a structured set of hands-on materials. Classrooms are mixed-age. There are no grades, no homework, no lectures. The teacher observes, guides, and intervenes when necessary. The child drives the process.

The data is strong. A 2023 meta-analysis published in the Campbell Systematic Reviews examined 32 studies across 132,000 data points and found that Montessori students outperformed traditional students on virtually every measure. By sixth grade, Montessori students were roughly a full school year ahead in language, math, and general academic ability.

The nonacademic gains were even more striking. Montessori students showed significantly stronger executive function (the ability to self-regulate, plan, and hold information in working memory) than their traditional peers. The largest gap of all was in how students experienced school itself. Montessori kids simply liked being there more. Across 132,000 data points, that was the single most consistent advantage.

Effects were strongest at the preschool and elementary level, and stronger in private Montessori than public implementations. That distinction matters because the Montessori name isn't trademarked. Anyone can put it on a school sign. Fidelity to the actual method varies enormously, and the research suggests fidelity is what produces results.

There are roughly 3,500 Montessori schools in the US, with tuition ranging from free (in public magnet programs) to $20,000+ for private. It's the most accessible of the proven alternatives.

The concern is what happens after elementary school. The research thins out considerably at the middle and high school level, and parents regularly report that the transition to traditional schooling can be rough. A child who has spent eight years directing their own learning may struggle when suddenly asked to sit in rows, follow a fixed syllabus, and perform under timed exam conditions. The very qualities the model cultivates (autonomy, self-direction, intrinsic motivation) can become liabilities inside a system that rewards compliance.

### Waldorf

Waldorf takes a different bet. Where Montessori trusts the child to lead, Waldorf trusts the developmental sequence. The curriculum is arts-integrated and staged to match what the school’s founder, Rudolf Steiner, believed children are ready for at each age. Formal reading instruction is delayed until six to seven years old. The same teacher stays with a class for multiple years. Screens are absent from the classroom. Students knit, do woodworking, paint, and perform music alongside their academic work.

The academic results tell an interesting story. A study of California's Waldorf-inspired charter schools found that Waldorf students significantly underperformed both charter and traditional public school peers in every subject between third and sixth grade. Then something shifted. By seventh grade, Waldorf students caught up. By eighth grade, they surpassed both comparison groups by nearly five percentage points in ELA and math. The researchers described it as a "slower academic build-up" producing stronger advanced performance. The tortoise and the hare.

Where Waldorf consistently shines is in the nonacademic outcomes. Studies show higher motivation, greater enthusiasm for learning, lower aggression, stronger moral reasoning, and more positive attitudes toward school. A 2012 German study found Waldorf students significantly more enthusiastic about learning and more likely to feel individually known by their teachers. A longitudinal survey found over 80% of Waldorf alumni rated their education as the most important influence in developing their sense of responsibility for others.

The tension with Waldorf is real, and it cuts two ways. The delayed reading approach has more support than most parents expect. A longitudinal study by Sebastian Suggate, published in the Journal of Research in Reading, found that while early readers appear to outperform late readers in the short term, the gap disappears entirely by age 11; and late readers often surpass their peers in comprehension and motivation. Finland delays formal reading instruction until age 7 (the same age as Waldorf) and consistently outperforms almost every other country in literacy. The data suggests that the anxiety parents feel about a non-reading seven-year-old may be exactly backwards.

But that aggregate picture hides a genuine risk. Research on the science of reading shows that 20-30% of children need explicit, systematic phonics instruction to become fluent readers, and children who aren't reading by the end of third grade face significantly higher odds of never reading fluently. Traditional Waldorf schools have historically resisted structured phonics programs, and some parents of struggling readers report hitting a wall when they try to get early intervention. Several Waldorf schools have begun integrating structured literacy alongside their traditional methods (the Lake Champlain Waldorf School in Vermont is one example), but this adaptation is far from universal. If your child happens to fall in that 20-30%, the delay could cost them.

Montessori and Waldorf arrive at the same conclusion from different directions: slowing down early pays dividends later. Montessori lets the child set the pace. Waldorf holds the child back from abstraction until they're developmentally ready for it. Both produce students who underperform on early standardized metrics and outperform on later ones. Both produce students who actually like school.

The factory model's obsession with early measurable outcomes (reading by five, multiplication by seven, test scores by eight) may have the entire sequence backwards. We're optimizing for the wrong end of the timeline.

## The New Guard

### Alpha School

Alpha School (@AlphaSchoolATX) is the model getting the most attention right now, and it most directly validates the argument I made in 16,000 Hours.

Students spend two hours each morning learning core academics through an AI-driven platform that adapts in real time to what they know and what they don't, what engages them and what doesn't. There are no teachers in the traditional sense. "Guides" earning six-figure salaries provide motivational and emotional support rather than academic instruction. Afternoons are devoted to life skills workshops, entrepreneurship, public speaking, and passion projects. There is no homework.

The results are hard to dismiss. Alpha students score at the 99th percentile on NWEA MAP testing in every grade from kindergarten through eleventh, in every subject tested. Their senior class SAT average is 1535. Their freshmen average 1410, outscoring most schools' juniors and seniors. But the most remarkable finding is how fast they're still improving. In educational statistics, high-achieving students typically show slower growth (there's less room to gain when you're already near the ceiling).

Alpha students are learning at 1.7 to 5 times the national average despite already being at the 99th percentile. That combination (elite achievement and elite growth simultaneously) is the rarest outcome in American K-12 education. In 2025, Alpha graduated its first class of seniors. Eleven of twelve went on to four-year universities; the other founded a company and raised VC funding.

Joe Liemandt (@jliemandt), Alpha's principal, published a detailed breakdown of these numbers in a mid-year report card thread.

The obvious caveat is cost. Tuition starts at $40,000 in Austin and climbs to $75,000 in San Francisco. Parents paying that kind of money for an experimental school are not a random sample of the population. They're among the most engaged, most resourced families in the country. You cannot extrapolate Alpha's results to the general public and call it a day.

But that's not really the point. The key thing that Alpha demonstrates is that excellent academic outcomes can be achieved in two hours of focused instruction per day. Everything else in the school day (the remaining six hours of athletics, projects, and life skills) is a bonus, not a prerequisite.

Now consider what the public system spends. The U.S. averages roughly $17,000 per pupil per year; in New York, it's closer to $30,000. That's $857 billion annually across the K-12 system. And the returns? NAEP scores in math and reading are worse today than they were in 2003. Public schools are spending more per student than at any point in history and getting less for it.

Alpha School suggests that the bottleneck was never money. It was time allocation. If two hours of well-designed instruction can outperform seven hours of traditional schooling, the question for public education is “what on earth are we spending all of this time and money on"? The answer to that could make public school not just more effective, but cheaper for taxpayers.

### Acton Academy

Acton Academy makes a different bet on the same underlying insight. Founded in 2009 by Jeff and Laura Sandefer, Acton organizes education around the "hero's journey." Students (called "eagles") set their own goals, design their own learning paths, and are held accountable not by teachers but by their peers. Socratic discussions replace lectures. Real-world apprenticeships replace theoretical career prep. Adults are guides who ask questions rather than provide answers.

Students at the Austin flagship have been advancing as much as three grade levels per year. Half of their sixth graders exceed state twelfth-grade standards. Graduates leave with portfolios and seven years of apprenticeship experience that colleges are increasingly valuing over traditional transcripts. One graduate was hired directly out of high school by a Silicon Valley company. Another was asked by a college professor to lead multiple classes in goal-setting and project management as a freshman.

What makes Acton structurally interesting is the franchise model. There are now over 300 Acton Academies worldwide, with tuition around $8,600 to $9,300; roughly what taxpayers already spend per public school student in many states. That makes it one of the more accessible options on this list.

Franchise quality varies, though, and significantly. The model requires exceptional guides and deeply committed parents. Acton also takes its own standards seriously enough that 10-15% of students don't make it and get voted out by their peers. You can read that as harsh or as honest, but a system that enforces its own standards is at minimum a system that believes in something.

The gap worth flagging is evidence. Montessori has a century of research and a 32-study meta-analysis. Waldorf has longitudinal data stretching back decades. Acton has testimonials and internal metrics. The "three grade levels per year" claim comes from the school's own reporting; there's no independent, peer-reviewed study confirming it across the network. That is not to say that the results aren't real. It means we're taking them on faith in a way we don't have to with the established alternatives.

Alpha School uses AI to compress academics into two hours and fills the rest with life skills. Acton Academy uses peer accountability and Socratic discussion to make the student the driver of their own education. Both reject the assumption that learning requires seven hours of adult-led instruction. Both produce students who outperform the traditional model by wide margins. And both, in different ways, point toward something genuinely exciting: if the core insight holds (that focused, personalized instruction beats bulk seat time), then the architecture of the factory school isn't just outdated. It's optional.

The question is how to make that option available to everyone, not just the families who can afford to opt out.

## Homeschooling and Microschools

The fastest-growing segment of American education isn't a school at all.

Homeschooling now accounts for roughly 3.7 million students in the US (about 6.73% of school-age children). According to Johns Hopkins' Homeschool Research Lab, growth in 2024-25 averaged 4.9% nationally—nearly triple the pre-pandemic rate. 36% of reporting states recorded their highest homeschool enrollment ever, surpassing even pandemic peaks. The researchers at Johns Hopkins are clear: rising homeschool rates cannot be explained away by the pandemic. We are experiencing a structural shift in how American families think about education.

The research data, while complicated by the selection bias I mentioned earlier, is consistently positive. Homeschooled students score 15 to 25 percentile points above public school students on standardized tests. 78% of peer-reviewed studies show homeschoolers performing statistically better than institutional peers. College acceptance rates run around 87% for homeschoolers versus 68% for public school graduates.

The most interesting development here isn't the solo family at the kitchen table, though. The category has outgrown that image entirely. 29% of homeschool families now participate in hybrid models: co-ops, microschools, and learning cooperatives. These are small, often parent-founded communities of 5 to 30 students that combine the personalization of homeschooling with the structure and socialization of a traditional school. The National Microschooling Center's 2025 report found microschools operating in all fifty states, with 84% serving elementary-aged children and a growing number expanding into middle and high school.

Microschools solve the two biggest criticisms of homeschooling (socialization and parental burnout) while preserving what makes it work (personalization and parental agency). They also address the biggest structural problem with traditional school: scale. A microschool with 15 students and two adults can do things a classroom of 40 simply cannot.

The cost of homeschooling itself is low ($700 to $1,800 per student annually), but it requires at least one parent with serious time flexibility, which is its own form of expense. Quality depends entirely on parental capability and commitment. Regulatory oversight also varies wildly by state.

Colorado, where I live, has relatively light requirements, which cuts both ways. On one hand, freedom for capable families. On the other, no safety net for kids whose parents aren't up to the task.

But the trajectory is clear. Homeschooling is no longer a fringe decision made by religious families or off-grid idealists. It's a rational response to a system that isn't keeping up. And the hybrid models (co-ops, microschools, learning pods) are quietly building the infrastructure that could make personalized education scalable without requiring a stay-at-home parent or a $40,000 tuition check. If any model eventually closes the access gap, it will probably look less like a school and more like this.

## What the Data Tells Us

I've spent months sitting with the question of what kind of school to choose and I still haven't decided what my wife and I will do when the time comes. My goal with this essay is not to sell you on a model, but to share what I have found.

Across every alternative I studied, four patterns hold:

**Personalization works.** Every model that outperforms the factory school shares one structural feature: it adapts to the individual student rather than forcing the student to adapt to the group. This is exactly what Benjamin Bloom proved in 1984 when he found that one-on-one tutored students outperformed 98% of classroom peers. The alternative models have each found a different way to approximate that effect.

**The mentor beats the lecturer.** Whether it's a Montessori guide, a Waldorf class teacher, an Acton eagle, or an engaged homeschool parent, the relationship between teacher and student is the mechanism that produces results. The ancient Greeks understood this. Socrates didn't deliver lectures. He asked questions. The factory model abandoned that insight for efficiency, and we've been paying for it since.

**Early metrics are not destiny.** Waldorf's slow build, Montessori's child-led pacing, and Alpha's compressed academic day all suggest that trusting the developmental process produces better long-term outcomes than optimizing for early standardized performance. The parents most likely to choose these models are the ones comfortable enough to ignore the scoreboard for a few years. That comfort is itself a privilege.

**Cost remains the binding constraint.** The best alternatives are either expensive (Alpha, private Montessori) or demand enormous parental investment of time and energy (homeschooling, co-ops). Technology may eventually close that gap. AI tutoring could make Alpha-style personalization available for a fraction of the cost. But right now, the families with the most options are the ones who need them least. That's a problem none of these models have solved, and it's the one that should trouble us most.

I don't have a recommendation. What I have is a conviction that the choice matters more than most parents realize. Choosing the traditional schooling model by inertia is still a choice; you're just making it passively. Those 16,000 hours are a finite resource. Once they're spent, they're gone.

The least you owe your kids is to make that choice deliberately.

5 Alternatives to the Factory School


A child spends roughly 16,000 hours in compulsory education between the ages of five and eighteen.

Reading, writing, arithmetic, basic scientific literacy, the core skills that everyone needs, require a fraction of that. With focused, competent instruction, you could cover the essentials in under an hour a day. Call it 2,000 hours, generously.

So what happens in the other 14,000?

Mostly crowd management. Standardized pacing. Making sure forty kids move through identical material at identical speed.

You might be thinking about starting a family soon. I am. And the closer that gets, the more a question keeps nagging at me: *what exactly am I handing my kids over to*?

I've spent a lot of time with this question lately. What I found unsettled me enough that I wanted to write it down. Not as a manifesto but as an invitation to rethink an imperfect system most of us have come to accept.

This essay is about what education used to mean, how we lost it, and whether technology might help us recover something ancient and valuable.

## The Three Losses

The Greeks had a word for what we now awkwardly call "holistic human development": *paideia*. It meant the deliberate formation of a person's character, judgment, physical capability, and capacity for flourishing.

Not training. Not credentialing. *Formation.*

Three ancient institutions embodied this ideal, and modern education has lost something essential from each.

**Plato's Academy** gave us *the method*.

Education was *dialectic* - structured conversation where the teacher asks questions and the student discovers answers through their own reasoning. In the *Meno*, Socrates teaches a slave boy geometry without telling him a single fact. He just asks questions until the boy derives the proof himself. Education as *drawing out*, not *pouring in*.

We've reversed the direction entirely. The modern classroom treats students as receptacles. A teacher stands at the front and delivers information. Students absorb it, regurgitate it during an exam, and forget most of it within weeks. The information flows one way. The student's existing understanding, their curiosity, their particular way of making sense of the world; none of that enters the equation.

**Aristotle's Lyceum** gave us *the purpose*.

Aristotle didn't educate people for employment. He educated them for *eudaimonia* - human flourishing. The curriculum spanned biology, ethics, politics, rhetoric. The breadth was seen as necessary because logic and judgment requires it. You can't reason well about ethics if you don't understand human nature. You can't understand human nature if you've never studied a living system. The Lyceum produced people capable of thinking across domains, not specialists trapped inside one.

Lessons at the Lyceum were taken while walking. Schooling happened in gardens, in motion, in the physical world. Why not teach biology while walking through an ecosystem? Why not teach geometry while building something? The idea that education requires fluorescent lights and plastic chairs would have struck Aristotle as absurd.

**The Hellenistic schools** (the Stoics, the Epicureans) gave us *the relationship*.

Education wasn't lectures. It was mentorship. Students didn't just learn Stoic philosophy; they practiced it daily through exercises, journaling, and accountability to a teacher who knew them deeply. The relationship between teacher and student was closer to what we'd now call coaching or apprenticeship. The teacher wasn't an information-delivery system. They were a moral exemplar. A character-former.

These three institutions look different on the surface but they share an identical architecture. Small groups. Extended duration. Relationships deep enough that the teacher understood each student's particular way of thinking, their intellectual blocks and their natural curiosities.

Socratic dialogue requires an understanding of where each individual's reasoning breaks down so you can ask the question that unlocks it. Character mentorship requires knowing the person well enough to see what they don't see in themselves. Tailoring curriculum to curiosity requires time to discover what that curiosity actually is.

All three models shared one assumption: a low ratio of students to teachers. All three produced extraordinary results. And all three have been dismissed as impossible at scale.

## The Factory

Before the 1840s, most children received no formal education at all. Some attended church-run charity schools. Some learned a trade through apprenticeship. Most remained illiterate. Education was either elite or non-existent.

The Industrial Revolution changed the equation. Factories needed literate workers who could read instructions, follow schedules, and perform specialized tasks. Armies needed soldiers who could read orders and operate increasingly complex equipment.

For the first time in history, mass literacy became an economic and political necessity, not a luxury. The question was how to produce it at scale when nobody had done it before.

Prussia was the first to solve this problem, and they solved it the way you solve any manufacturing challenge: standardization, efficiency, scalability. Standardize the curriculum so you can train teachers quickly. Group students by age so you can process them in batches. Create clear metrics so you can prove to taxpayers that the system works.

Horace Mann visited Prussia in 1843 and saw an answer to a different American problem. Massive immigration. Rapid industrialization. Dozens of languages and customs colliding in cities that hadn't existed a generation earlier. The factory school would do more than teach reading; it would manufacture Americans. Shared curriculum, shared language, shared civic values. The Pledge of Allegiance was mandated in schools in 1892 for a reason.

The mission kept expanding. Universal literacy became vocational preparation (adding shop classes, emphasizing punctuality and rule-following). Vocational preparation became college preparation (the post-WWII expansion, the GI Bill era). College preparation became credentialing and sorting (once degrees became employment requirements).

Each shift made sense in its moment. But the cumulative effect was that nobody could articulate what school was *for* anymore. Citizenship training? Vocational prep? Intellectual development? Childcare? The mission became incoherent. The structure stayed the same.

Now, the system serves too many functions to reform. Parents need childcare. Employers need credentials. Teachers need stable jobs. Politicians need something to campaign on. Real estate agents need good school districts to sell houses. Even people who recognize the system is broken have no obvious alternative that serves all these constituencies simultaneously.

Meanwhile, inside the classroom, the constraint is brutal. One teacher. Forty students. One pace.

The struggling student doesn't need the same material delivered more slowly, they need a completely different entry point into the material. The advanced student doesn't need to wait, they need new threads to explore. Both are failed by the same system for the same structural reason: the assumption that there's one path through any subject and the only variable is how fast you walk it.

Teachers aren't the problem. Teachers are *victims* of this system. The job has been reduced to information delivery and crowd management—the two least human parts of education.

There's simply no time for individualized attention when you're managing forty kids through a standardized curriculum on a standardized timeline.

## Bloom's Ghost

In 1984, the educational psychologist Benjamin Bloom published a paper called "The 2 Sigma Problem." His finding was staggering: students who received one-on-one tutoring performed two standard deviations better than students in conventional classrooms. *The average tutored student outperformed 98% of the classroom group.*

We've known this for over forty years. The education establishment's response has been to search for group instruction methods that approach tutoring's effectiveness. They haven't found them.

I know why, because I've been on the other side of it.

When I was a post-grad in Edinburgh, I tutored five students aged thirteen to seventeen through their GCSEs and A-Levels (the UK's standard curriculum).

One of them, a brilliant kid with a deep interest in the humanities, was falling behind in Biology. To him, the material was a disconnected pile of facts: molecular structures, cell processes, biodiversity categories. None of it cohered.

The standard fix would have been more practice papers. More revision. More repetition of the same content at the same angle. Instead, I took him to the university and we spent a day in the sciences library going deep on evolutionary theory, which, absurdly, occupied only a tiny fraction of his actual syllabus.

He was fascinated. And once he saw evolution as the organizing principle (the trunk from which molecular biology, cell structure, and biodiversity all branch) the disconnected facts became a coherent system. I didn't teach him Biology. I taught him how Biology *thinks*. I could only do that because I had one student, I knew his interests, and I had the freedom to throw out the syllabus for a day and find the door that opened for *him specifically*.

No classroom teacher with forty kids can do that. That's the supply problem Bloom identified.

But what Bloom didn't measure is that the supply problem creates its own demand problem. When students have no agency over what they learn, no ability to follow their curiosity, they stop wanting to learn at all. School becomes something that happens *to* them. A chore imposed by adults, not a pursuit they'd choose.

My student proved this in reverse. Once the material became *his*, once he saw the organizing principle and felt the fascination, he started demanding more. He asked questions the syllabus didn't cover. The curiosity was always there. It had just been suffocated by a system that never gave it a foothold.

Think about your own education. The subjects where you had a teacher who made the material come alive, who connected it to something you already cared about. You looked forward to those classes. Homework wasn't a burden. But other subjects? They were pure drudgery. Something you struggled through out of a sense of duty, or in many cases, a fear of disciplinary action.

A personalized system doesn't just deliver better learning outcomes. It creates students who demand higher standards through their own inquiry. Solve the supply problem and the demand problem begins to resolve itself.

## The Door, Not the Room

We've known the solution to the education problem for forty years. Bloom proved it in 1984: students who received one-on-one tutoring performed vastly better than students in conventional classrooms. The constraint isn't knowledge. It's supply. We can't afford enough human tutors for every student.

AI changes this equation, but only if we're precise about what we're asking it to do.

When I tutored that struggling student, I didn't just explain the material differently. I diagnosed where his understanding was breaking down and found a different entry point. He needed the organizing principle before the details made sense. Another student might need the opposite: concrete examples first, theory later. A third might need to dissect something with their hands before any of it clicks. Different doors into the same room.

A classroom teacher with forty students cannot do this diagnostic work for each mind simultaneously. An AI system can. It can figure out that this student learns through narrative, that one through visual patterns, another through building physical models. It can map existing interests (this kid loves history, that one loves video games, another loves cooking) and route new material through those doorways. The personalization isn't about making things easier. It's about making them *accessible* to each specific mind.

To that end, AI can be a wonderful syllabus architect.

Right now a teacher plans one lesson for forty students. With AI as the planning layer, that teacher could have forty customized curricula but the actual teaching still happens human-to-human.

The AI handles what computers are good at: pattern matching, optimization, infinite patience for iteration. It generates the reading list, the problem sets, the sequence of topics tailored to each student's starting point and learning style. Then it assigns the actual work: read this book, conduct this experiment, have this conversation with your teacher, build this thing with your hands.

Much of the learning itself could happen off-screen. The AI just makes it possible for one human teacher to mentor multiple students deeply instead of managing a crowd superficially.

The teacher uses the AI the way a carpenter uses power tools—they make the work faster and more precise, but they don't replace the craftsman's judgment. The Socratic questioning, the character formation, the mentoring; that still requires a human.

The fear that AI will make education more alienating is justified if we're talking about parking kids in front of YouTube videos or chatbot tutors. Instead, technology could be the mechanism that makes the Greek model economically viable for the first time since antiquity.

This points to another crisis hiding inside the first: we've built a system that repels great teachers. Smart, high-character people largely don't go into teaching today. The pay is poor, the autonomy is nonexistent, and the job has been hollowed out into information delivery and discipline.

If technology reclaims those functions, teaching becomes what it was supposed to be: mentorship, dialogue, formation. That's a vocation worth choosing. That's a job that might attract the kind of people who currently go into tech or consulting or finance because those fields offer the intellectual challenge, autonomy and financial incentives that teaching no longer does.

## The Question You're Not Asking

Everything I've described so far is structural. Policy-level. Easy to nod along with. But structure becomes personal the moment you're choosing a school for your own kid.

You've probably given some thought to schools. Maybe you've looked at test scores, browsed neighborhood rankings, asked friends where they're sending their kids. Most of us stop there.

But try a different question: how much of what you learned in school do you actually use? Not the credential; the knowledge. Think about the skills that matter most in your daily life. The ability to reason through an unfamiliar problem, communicate clearly, manage risk, stay focused when things get hard. Where did you pick those up? For most of us, the honest answer is *not in a classroom*. We learned them later, on the job, through relationships, through failure. School gave us the diploma. Life gave us the education.

Which raises another concerning point: the system that produced you is worse now than when you went through it. Classroom sizes have grown. Chromebooks have replaced conversation. Teachers have less autonomy. This is what you're about to hand your children to.

There's a reason homeschooling is the fastest-growing segment of American education right now. The families pulling their kids out aren't fringe. They're educated, affluent, and deliberate. They've looked at the system closely and decided to exit. You don't have to reach the same conclusion they did. But the trend is diagnostic. When the people with the most optionality are choosing to leave, it tells you something about what they're leaving.

## Paideia

The ancient Greeks had a word for what we've lost: *paideia*. Not job training. Not test preparation. The deliberate formation of a person's character, physical capability and capacity for flourishing. It encompassed everything: the intellectual and the physical, the individual and the civic. It was what education *meant* before we narrowed it down to credentials and childcare.

We have, for the first time, the technological capacity to return to that model. Not to replicate the ancient academies; they were small, elite, and exclusionary. But to take what made them work and make it economically viable at scale. The method exists. The technology exists. What's missing is the institutional will to dismantle a system that too many people depend on for too many reasons.

My wife and I want kids, and I'm looking at the same options you are: public school, private school, homeschool, some hybrid we haven't imagined yet. Each comes with tradeoffs I can't fully evaluate because we're all making these decisions inside a system that hasn't been redesigned since the Industrial Revolution.

But I know this: the question matters. What you're handing your children over to, what those 16,000 hours are actually *for*, whether the system produces flourishing humans or just sorts them into categories. These are decisions we'll all make in the next few years that will shape our children's mind, character, and capacity for a life well-lived.

The current model isn't the answer.

16,000 Hours


Alex Honnold just climbed Taipei 101 without a rope, and statistically, *it's one of the safest career decisions he's ever made*.

Yesterday morning, Honnold ascended 1,667 feet of steel and glass in ninety-one minutes. No harness. No net. Netflix built in a ten-second broadcast delay - exactly the time his body would take to hit the ground.

Millions watched, expecting transcendence or tragedy. The internet called him deranged, an irresponsible father of two young daughters, a man with a death wish.

The internet is wrong.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics tracks occupational fatality rates per 100,000 workers. Logging: 98.9 deaths per year. Fishing: 86.9. Roofers: 51.8. Truck drivers: 26.8.

Compound that across a career. A logger working 25 years faces a 2.44% lifetime chance of dying on the job. A roofer: 1.29%. These aren't abstractions. These are fathers dying at predictable rates to keep lumber cheap and shingles in place.

Nobody calls roofers deranged. Nobody questions whether a truck driver should have kids.

A roofer earns median $51,000 annually while facing that 51.8 per 100,000 death rate. Over 25 years: roughly $1.27 million lifetime earnings with a 1.29% chance of dying. That works out to about $98,000 per 0.1% of mortality risk.

Honnold's Netflix payment was reportedly mid-six figures. But that's just the direct fee. Factor in the exposure boost to his sponsorships, the speaking engagements he'll book referencing this climb, the documentary residuals; the total economic value of yesterday's ninety minutes is conservatively seven figures.

If his mortality risk was 0.5% (an absurdly high estimate I'll address shortly), he earned $200,000+ per 0.1% of risk. *For one morning.*

The roofer spends 50,000 career hours to achieve a fraction of that return.

The roofer is the one who should be questioned about risk tolerance.

The obvious objection: roofers don't choose hazardous work; they're constrained by circumstance. The risk is imposed, not embraced.

This is incomplete.

Every roofer chooses roofing over alternatives, just as Honnold chooses climbing. The difference isn't agency—it's payoff. Honnold takes visible risk for exceptional compensation.

Roofers take invisible risk for ordinary wages. We've simply decided that diffuse, unglamorous death is acceptable because the work needs doing.

But Honnold's risk wasn't 0.5%. Not even close.

I've climbed for ten years. I lead 5.11s, which makes me competent by gym standards and unremarkable by any serious measure. I've also played enough poker to understand bankroll management viscerally - the difference between sitting down with 10% of your net worth versus 0.1%.

Taipei 101 was compared by climbing media to two classic Yosemite routes stacked together, both graded 5.11c. But that comparison flatters the building. Rock climbing rewards problem-solving - every move is different, every sequence demands adaptation.

Taipei 101 is essentially the same three moves repeated for ninety minutes, with a balcony rest every eight floors. The actual climbing difficulty, accounting for the repetition and recovery opportunities, was probably closer to sustained 5.10d. Maybe easier.

The Yosemite Decimal System runs from 5.0 (walking) to 5.15d (achieved by maybe a dozen humans alive). Honnold's documented maximum is 5.14d. He warms up on 5.12s.

He free soloed El Capitan at 5.13a; a route with a V7 boulder problem crux at 1,700 feet where most climbers need to release all four points of contact to reach the final hold.

Taipei 101, at effective 5.10 with mandatory rest breaks, is what Honnold might climb to loosen up before a real session. Four to five letter grades below his max.

The equivalent of asking a chess grandmaster to beat a club player, or a professional poker player to grind out a win at $1-$2.

When I stepped up from $1-$2 to $2-$5 No Limit, buying in for $1,500 when my bankroll was $10,000 felt suicidal.

Then I watched high-stakes players with $500,000 on the table laughing at bad beats. Same variance. Radically different exposure. They were playing with 2% of their bankroll. I was playing with 15%.

Honnold climbing Taipei 101 is the professional with deep stacks. Thirty years of full-time climbing. Millions of moves. Two and a half months training specifically for this building. Plus balconies every eight floors—if anything felt wrong, he could stop.

This wasn't El Capitan, where retreat itself is death-defying. Taipei 101 was designed for controlled, iterative risk.

El Cap was truly risky.

Freerider contains a crux at 1,700 feet where one foot slip means a 3,000-foot fall onto granite talus. No balconies. No abort points.

Honnold spent eight years thinking about that climb, rehearsed it dozens of times on rope, backed off twice before completing it.

But he was unmarried, childless, and had explicitly framed the risk as worth taking for the accomplishment of a lifetime ambition.

Now he's forty with a wife and two daughters. His response to increased responsibility? He climbed something easier.

Taipei 101 was not El Capitan 2.0. *It was a deliberate regression toward safety* - maximum spectacle from minimum danger.

This is not someone who's lost control. This is someone who has internalized risk-reward so thoroughly he can extract everything the audience wants while exposing himself to almost nothing.

The people calling Honnold irresponsible are operating on vibes, not math.

They see the height and project their own terror. They imagine themselves—untrained, unacclimated—clinging to steel a thousand feet up.

They cannot imagine what it feels like when the skill gap between yourself and the challenge is so vast that the challenge barely registers.

I feel this projection too. Watching Honnold, my hands sweat. My body responds to the visual stimulus of danger even though I know I'm watching someone for whom this is routine.

*But my discomfort is about me, not him*. It reveals my limitations, not his recklessness.

Every year, approximately 400 roofers die in the United States. We don't know their names. We don't clutch pearls about their life choices. We don't ask whether they're being responsible fathers by going to work.

We accept that someone has to replace shingles, some will fall, and that's the cost of functional roofs.

The outrage at Honnold scales inversely with actual risk.

The Netflix audience can't distinguish 5.11c from 5.15d. All they see is a man without a rope on a tall building, and they assume he's insane.

He's not insane. He's skilled. The failure to perceive that distinction says something about us.

Honnold himself: "I like to differentiate between risk and consequence. When I'm free-soloing, I think the risk that I'll fall is quite low, but the consequence is serious."

Consequence severity (death) and probability of occurrence (approaching zero, for him, on this route) are separate variables.

A recreational climber free soloing Taipei 101 would be suicidal. Honnold has low probability and high consequence; acceptable, even prudent, given the compensation.

Meanwhile, a roofer has moderate probability and high consequence, repeated five days a week for decades, for wages that don't approach what Honnold earned yesterday.

The roofer is taking the worse bet. We just don't notice because it's invisible, unspectacular, and essential.

I'm implicated too. I drive a car. I eat processed food. I spend sedentary hours that will probably take more time from my life than anything Honnold has done to his.

*I accept these risks automatically because they're normalized, not because they're small.*

**The things that feel dangerous often aren't. The things that actually kill us often feel fine.**

Honnold ascending a skyscraper is a controlled demonstration of skill that looks terrifying.

Your commute to a job you tolerate is slow-motion death that feels like nothing.

Who's the reckless one?


Why we call Honnold reckless but ignore the roofers dying at predictable rates.

Honnold Isn't Reckless. You Are.


That $400 raw denim you've never washed. The $200 knife you only use to open Amazon packages. The Arc'teryx shell, still pristine after two years.

You're not buying quality. You're buying the *feeling* of being the kind of person who buys quality.

There's a difference.

I know because I've done it. Bought the "buy it for life" gear. Watched the heritage brand YouTube videos. Joined the subreddits. Talked about "patina development" like it was a spiritual practice.

Meanwhile, I couldn't change my own oil.

The gear was a costume. I was performing a character—*the competent man*—without doing the work to become him.

Heidegger had a term for this: *present-at-hand*. It's when a tool becomes an object of contemplation rather than an extension of your capability. You admire the hammer instead of driving the nail. You photograph the knife instead of using it.

The opposite is *ready-to-hand*: the tool disappears into use. You don't think about the wrench; you think about the bolt. The gear stops being a thing you *own* and becomes a thing you *wield*.

The EDC collector lives entirely in present-at-hand mode. The knife is rotated, photographed, discussed, but never absorbed into actual practice. It remains an object, not an instrument.

Here's the psychology underneath:

You work in abstraction. Emails, decks, Slack threads. You produce nothing tangible. At the end of the day, there's no object you made, no machine you fixed, nothing you can point to and say *I did that*.

This creates a specific anxiety. A suspicion that despite your income and your title, you couldn't survive a weekend without your laptop. Couldn't change a tire. Couldn't fix a leaky faucet. Couldn't make anything real.

The gear is a ward against that anxiety. You can't *be* capable, so you *buy* capable. The $800 jacket becomes a talisman. If I own what a competent man owns, maybe I am one.

**But it doesn't work.** You know it doesn't work. The anxiety stays because the incompetence stays.

Ask yourself this:

If your most expensive piece of gear broke tomorrow—really broke, not "send it back for warranty" broke—could you fix it?

Could you diagnose the problem? Source the parts? Do the repair yourself?

If the answer is no, you don't own it. You're renting it from the manufacturer until they decide it's not worth supporting anymore.

I rebuild motorcycles now. Old ones, temperamental ones. A Suzuki DR650 that's held together with J-B Weld and stubbornness.

Here's what I've learned: *ownership is maintenance*.

The bike breaks constantly. That's not a bug; it's a feature. Every breakdown is a lesson. Every repair is capability I didn't have before. I know why it runs rough at altitude. I can diagnose a misfire by sound. I've re-jetted the carb, rebuilt the clutch, replaced seals I didn't know existed six months ago.

The bike is ugly. It has scratches and duct tape and a cracked fairing. But it's *mine*. I've bled knuckles on it, misdiagnosed it, and often made it worse before I made it better. 

**That's ownership.** 

The guy with the showroom-clean bike isn't an owner. He's a custodian.

The Stoics understood this. Epictetus said the only things truly up to us are our own capacities - our judgment, our skills, our character. Everything else can be taken.

Your gear can be lost, stolen, broken, discontinued. *Your capability cannot.*

So why are you investing in the thing that can be taken instead of the thing that can't?

Here's the uncomfortable reframe:

You're not failing to develop real skills. You're *succeeding* at avoiding the discomfort of being a beginner.

Buying gear feels like progress. Feels like you're *becoming* the capable person. But it's actually a way to skip the part where you don't know what you're doing. The part where you break things. The part where you look stupid.

The fix isn't complicated. It's just uncomfortable.

Pick one machine. Car, motorcycle, bicycle; something with moving parts and the capacity to fail. Learn to maintain it yourself. Not "watch YouTube videos about maintaining it." Actually do it. Bleed the brakes. Change the oil. Adjust the valves.

You will screw it up. You will break something. You will feel stupid. This is the tax you pay to actually own what you own.

The alternative is to keep buying talismans. Keep performing competence. Keep feeling that low-grade anxiety every time someone asks if you can help them move something heavy.

Seven months ago the account [@sailing_with_phoenix](https://www.instagram.com/sailing_with_phoenix/) marked 1,000 followers with a humble thanks; this week its owner—29-year-old Oliver Widger and his cat, Phoenix—celebrated *a thousand miles and a million followers*.

The profile header now shows **≈1.21 million** supporters who have effectively crowdfunded his escape from corporate life.

Why does one man’s risky, uncomfortable voyage captivate such a vast audience of tech workers and young professionals who, on paper, enjoy unprecedented comfort and optionality?

### The vacuum Phoenix sails into

Psychiatrist **Viktor Frankl** warned that when the *will to meaning* is frustrated we experience an *existential vacuum*—a hollow restlessness that no salary or perk can fill. “He who has a *why* to live for can bear almost any *how*,” he wrote, paraphrasing Nietzsche.

### Consumerism’s cul-de-sac

It is no coincidence we witness Phoenix through the very medium that often deepens our malaise. Studies link heavy social-media use to upward comparison, envy and diminished self-worth; Gen Z now reports “LinkedIn envy” as another confidence-crusher.

Yet the phone can also act as a portal: in a single swipe we trade office fluorescence for the cobalt Pacific. The irony is stark—digitally overstimulated viewers borrow someone else’s analogue meaning in 30-second loops.

### Adventure as modern myth-fix

Narratively, Widger’s feed tracks almost beat-for-beat with Joseph Campbell’s *Hero’s Journey*: the call, the threshold, the trials (day-nine rudder failure), the transformation. The archetype is ancient but resonates anew with cohorts who, surveys show, **value purpose over pay-rise and would quit misaligned roles without another offer lined up**.

Adventure promises what open-plan offices seldom do: agency, consequence, community (albeit virtual), and the right kind of tension Frankl deemed essential to mental health.

### What Phoenix teaches the harbour-bound

1. **Risk is a prerequisite, not a bug.** Frankl argued that humans need *noö-dynamics*—the tension between who we are and who we might become. Comfort alone cannot supply that load-bearing stress.
2. **Replace comparison with participation.** Instead of voyeuristic doom-scrolling, choose a *micro-quest*: a coding side-project, a bikepacking loop, a neighbourhood mutual-aid group. Agency beats envy.
3. **Audit the story your work tells.** If your daily sprint goals feel “socially useless,” negotiate scope toward genuine value or plot an exit while the labour market is still in your favour.
4. **Build real-world fellowship.** Phoenix’s million-strong armada is inspiring but intangible. Meaning scales fastest in small crews—co-founders, old friends, five-a-side teammates—where commitment is mutual, not algorithmic.

### Landfall

When Widger finally sights the green peaks of Hilo, he will toast with a lukewarm beer and patch-sun-bleached sails. Most of his followers will be commuting to Monday stand-ups. But the wake of his story will linger: a reminder that *meaning is rarely found in comfort, often found in courage, and always found in motion toward a self-chosen horizon.*

I first picked up *Man's Search for Meaning* at twenty, on a bus rattling through a gray London morning. By page ten I'd stopped noticing the rain. Frankl's account of three years in Nazi concentration camps is mercilessly bleak, yet every chapter hums with hope. Whenever life swerves dark, this slim book hauls me back into perspective. 

What follows isn't a substitute for reading the original (please do that), but a distilled tour of why Frankl's ideas still punch above their weight, particularly in our radically transorming world.

## The compressed Frankl origin story
* **Vienna, 1905:** Born to Jewish parents; teenage pen-pal of Sigmund Freud.
* **1920s:** Studies psychiatry; ditches Freud's "everything is suppressed sex" point of view. Joins Adler's circle, then leaves that too. Two academic expulsions before age 23. V punk.
* **1930s:** Runs Vienna's suicide-prevention clinic, pioneers therapy that asks patients *what* they still live for, not *why* they suffer.

Ask a philosopher what drives people and you'll typically get one of two answers:

1.	**Pleasure** – Epicurus, Freud, and every advertiser since.

2.	**Power** – Nietzsche, Machiavelli, and much of corporate America.

Frankl offers an alternate path: ***the will to meaning***. Strip everything else away, he says, and our deepest urge is to feel that life asks something of us, and that we can answer.

He didn't reach that conclusion in a seminar room. He tested it in Auschwitz and Dachau, watching men with the same rations, the same frostbitten toes, the same random beatings either harden into steel or dissolve almost overnight. The difference came down to what, if anything, still felt meaningful to each individual.

**What the collapse looked like:**

A man would step off a transport already gaunt, clothes swapped for a striped uniform, name replaced by a number. At first he hoarded tiny dignities - straightening his cap, saving half a crust for a friend - but one morning the *Muselmann* took hold. 

That was the camp slang for prisoners who had given up. Shoulders curled, eyes emptied. They stopped vying for shelter in the blockhouse, stopped dodging the Kapos' lashes, sometimes stopped standing during roll call and were shot where they knelt. Frankl noticed the tipping point was almost always hope detonating in a single blast: 

*"Christmas will bring liberation"... "The Allies will be here by my birthday."*

When that date slipped by, so did the holder of hope's will, and typhus or dysentery finished the job.

**What survival sounded like:**

A few feet away another prisoner, no less hungry, repeated Goethe under his breath, pacing out invisible lecture halls in the snow. One man re-imagined the half-finished violin concerto he'd left in Vienna and tapped its rhythm on the bunk slat each night. Frankl himself spent precious energies outlining chapters of the book you're reading about now, scribbling formulas for Logotherapy on scavenged cigarette papers.

Those mental rehearsals did more than distract. They **stretched the horizon**. 

Tomorrow had a task waiting: a concerto to complete, a manuscript to salvage, a reunion to attempt. When the guards tore off wedding bands, some prisoners still traced the missing ring with their thumb as a silent vow - *I'm still a husband, even here.* 

Identity, once claimed, created a membrane the camp could bruise but not pierce.

Purpose wasn't always grand. A man who resolved each morning to share his ladle of soup with the old mathematician two bunks over statistically outlasted many who focused only on their own stomachs. Acts of help like propping up a stranger on the death march, translating an order so a newcomer avoided a beating, restored the doer's sense that he could still **cause meaningful good** in the world. 

Even a sliver of agency thickened the membrane against despair.

Frankl called our attitude in the face of suffering "the final human freedom," and he meant it literally. Nutrition, sleep, and temperature were dictated; stance was elective.

Frankl never romanticised the camps. Many purposeful, hopeful people died by random selection. But when all external variables were equal, **meaning supplied the margin**. 

Purpose extended the fuse; its absence snuffed it.

Frankl's prized manuscript was confiscated on day one in the camps. He spent nights scribbling fragments on scavenged slips of paper, convinced the world still needed those ideas. Your version doesn't have to reinvent psychotherapy - just something you'll chase even when motivation flat-lines. A song, a startup, a garden, a tiny code library that saves other devs an hour: pick your poison.

2. **Love**

Separated from his wife, Frankl survived by replaying her smile in his mind's cinema. Romantic love isn't the only flavor here; deep friendship, family ties, even stubborn compassion for strangers keep the pilot light burning. 3. **Attitude toward unavoidable suffering**

You can be a devout Catholic, a devout skeptic, or something in between, but the assignment is identical: *create, love, and choose your stance toward suffering*.

How AI Levels the Playing Field


**In the late 80s, the world was on the brink of a monumental transformation.** Personal computers had evolved into powerful tools capable of revolutionizing how we work, learn, and communicate. However, despite their immense potential, these machines remained largely inaccessible to the average person. The issue lay not in the technology itself, but in the way users interacted with it. Complex command lines and cryptic codes created a formidable barrier.

*The breakthrough came with the advent of the graphical user interface (GUI)*. This innovation was more than just a technical upgrade; it was a democratizing force. The GUI replaced convoluted commands with intuitive visuals, transforming personal computers into something everyone could use. *By making technology accessible, the GUI didn't merely enable a few more people to use computers—it ignited a revolution that changed the world.* Computing became an integral part of daily life, heralding the dawn of the digital age.

## The AI Crossroads

Today, we find ourselves at a similar crossroads. AI technology has made remarkable strides, boasting capabilities that could reshape entire industries and transform problem solving methods. From enhancing healthcare diagnostics to optimizing supply chains, the potential of AI is vast. *Yet, akin to the early days of personal computing, a significant barrier persists: user experience.*

Current AI interfaces mirror the early, command-line-driven days of computing. They can be complex, requiring specialized knowledge and creating friction that discourages widespread use.

**The challenge now is not just making AI smarter—*it's about making it approachable, intuitive, and genuinely useful for everyone***. The objective is to create a user experience that allows anyone, regardless of technical expertise, to harness AI's power.

Bridging the AI Gap


Pessimism is rife in modern times.

When thousands in the UK were recently asked if they believe that the world is improving, only 11% said that they did.

Is this pessimism well founded? By the end of this essay, I hope to convince you that it is not.

## 3 reasons we're inclined towards pessimism:

1. **We are survival machines.** Our minds are designed to constantly scan our environments for potential threats to our existence. In the environment of our ancestors, a jumpy nature was adaptive. We are descended from the most fretful humans of the past, not their daring cousins.

   This selective pressure has produced a negativity bias - adverse events have a more significant impact on our psychological state than positive events. We feel negative events more intensely.

2. **Media institutions exploit our negativity bias.** Both traditional media and social media use advertising as their dominant business model. As such, the key focus for media institutions is to maximise the number of eyeballs on their channels.

   Since human beings are wired to have a more intense reaction to negative stimuli, it's no wonder that the trending stories on CNN or Twitter tend to be negative in nature. The proportion of negative to positive events portrayed in the media does not correlate with their prevalence in the real world.

3. **Bad news is sudden, good news is gradual.** Floods, bombings, forest fires, school shootings… all of these things happen in a flash of horror. This makes for gripping news.

   Consider that 100,000 people will be lifted out of absolute poverty today. Why are there no reports of that on TV? 

   Because it has happened, on average, every day for the last decade.

89% of people are pessimistic about the future because they are exposed to a snapshot of the world that does not remotely resemble reality.

## Life on the Bright Side

I have no data to support this, but I believe that the epidemic of mental illness, suicide and drug abuse that plagues our times is in part due to the increasingly widespread adoption of a pessimistic worldview.

### 3 key psychological benefits of optimism:

1. **Experience more positive emotion.** Optimistic people are happier because they imagine positive events more vividly and expect them to occur sooner. This boosts their feeling of anticipation, which is greater the more pleasurable the anticipated event. The more vividly we can imagine it, the more probable we think it is to happen, and this leads us to more positive feelings generally.

2. **Build better relationships.** Pessimists, with their incessant complaints and unrelenting chip on their shoulder tend not to be the kind of people that others want to associate with. On the other hand, we love to be around people who make us feel good about ourselves and the world around us. Optimists excel at doing just that.

3. **Optimism and agency.** Depression is often accompanied by a pessimistic explanatory style: we tend to blame ourselves for misfortune, believe it's permanent, and believe it affects all areas of life. Depressed people exhibit learned helplessness, the feeling that they're not in control of their lives. 

   In contrast, optimism brings a sense of agency and confidence, and with it, a lower likelihood of falling into a rut of despair and hopelessness.

Suffice it to say, when it comes to the goal of living a happy life, an optimistic outlook is a key prerequisite.

But so is an outlook informed by truth. Our optimism about the world must be based on a factful understanding of human progress. It must be based in reality.

## Human Flourishing - Quantified

I want to present 15 global trends that completely blew my mind when I first encountered them.
But first... an admission.

I believed that my children would inherit a world that is far worse than the one I grew up in.

I held on to that belief for years... until I looked at the data on human flourishing.

An understanding of the facts relating to human progress over the last few decades completely changed my outlook on life. I'll present a few of those facts below (sources for each data point are available at the end of the essay - trust me, many are so unbelievable that you'll want to verify their accuracy).

I hope they shatter your pessimistic intuitions as powerfully as they did mine.

1. Global GDP per capita has increased from $445 in 1960 to almost $11,000 today. [1]
2. In 1910, 66% of the worlds population lived in absolute poverty. Today, only 8.6% do. [2]
3. Famines are non-existent outside of warzones and oppressive autocracies. [3]
4. Global tree canopy coverage increased by 2.24 million km² between 1982 and 2016. [4]
5. Global income inequality is falling year on year. [5]
6. In 1990, 47% of the world's population lived in slums. That figure fell to 29% by 2018. [6]
7. In 1990 only 11% of seats in national parliaments were held by women. Today - 25%. [7]
8. In 1910, only 20% of the world's population was literate. Today, over 90% are. [8]
9. Average years of schooling have increased from 2 years in 1930 to 9 years today. [9]
10. For every year that you've lived, average life expectancy has gone up by 3 months. [10]
11. Infant mortality has fallen from 64.5 deaths per 1,000 live births in 1990 to 28 today. [11]
12. Number of hours worked per year has decreased from 2,124 in 1950 to 1,732 in 2017. [12]
13. 15.6% of the earth's land and 7.6% of the world's ocean is now protected for nature. [13]
14. Carbon emissions per dollar of GDP have reduced by 62% globally since 1990. [14]
15. Global cereal yields have increased from 1.4 tonnes per hectare in 1960 to over 4 today. [15]

If you believe like I did that the future will likely be a very bleak place, these trends should give you pause.

Humanity certainly faces grave challenges. I'm by no means advocating complacency.

But it's worth remembering that solutions to past challenges were provided by people intent on bringing their vision of a better future to life.

They were provided by optimists.

Why is pessimism about our future so common when we live in the most abundant time humanity has ever known?

Reflections on Optimism


*On one level, its the study of the mind as it relates to behaviour.* But if we think about what that means, we'll see that psychology is ultimately concerned with the factors that motivate a person to take a specific action. *It's about the mental states which determine our decision to do anything.*

**So when we ask why studying psychology is useful, we're really asking why understanding human motivation is useful.**

## 3 reasons:

### *1 - Human motivation/behaviour applies to everything*

Psychology is foundational to Economics, Sociology, Psychiatry, Neuroscience, Education, Criminology and many other subjects. Even in your job, whatever it is, psychological principles will apply. **An understanding of human motivation is an understanding of personal wellbeing, relationships, sales, product design, user experience, company culture, strategic planning and so much more.**

*That matters to you, no matter your job.*

### *2 - Understand yourself*

We like to think that we are fully autonomous agents directing all of our thoughts and actions. In reality though, *our behaviour is determined by a complex interplay of experience, emotions and biases.* As the great philosopher David Hume said, **"reason is the slave of the passions"**.

*Psychology allows you to empower reason against the passions.*

### *3 - Understand others*

Once your own motivations are understood, it is possible to extrapolate that understanding to the motivations of others. A strong sense of the many factors which drive behaviour in other people will make you a more effective empathiser and thereby a more effective communicator. **Understanding how others tick will allow you to adjust your communication for maximum effectiveness.**
